SMT & THT PCB Assembly Automation for EMS Factories

The following rules are specific to IM equipment (also known as Through

Hole) :

• Whenever powering the IM machine down for maintenance, follow

the next two procedures:

• On the AC power panel, push the breakers to the OFF

position. Also, at the AC power panel, turn the key to the

OFF position and remove.

• Attach a warning notice to the AC power panel showing the

machine is not operational and only the maintenance

technician is authorized to restore power.

• Disable the Full Command function to prevent machine operation

from a Host controller or UCT. This must be done if a maintenance

procedure requires machine power.

• Only qualified maintenance technicians are to use the Interlock

Bypass key switch to bypass the IM safety interlock circuits.

 • Interlock Bypass: Never leave the Interlock Bypass key in the On

position except during maintenance. During non-maintenance

operations, the key switch must be in the Off Remove position with

the key removed to a secure area.

The following procedure explains how to set up the head drive home pulse
with respect to the vertical and theta axes and the limit position.
Prerequisites:
Timing belts are removed
Tools:
MTR Home Pulse Setup Fixture
Comments:
This procedure is only used when setting the machine up at the factory or
when replacing the timing belt or motor in the field. Timing belts are to be
inspected on an annual basis.
This process is written for the use of both the manufacturing factory (place of
origin) technician performing the adjustment on the bench and the field
technician performing the adjustment at the customer's site.
The goal of this procedure is to position the head vertical at its negative limit
and the head theta at a point between its positive and negative limit
establishing the optima home pulse location, relevant to these limits.
Failure to properly perform this setup results in the machine not zeroing
properly.

Procedure:

1.Power down the machine and perform Lockout/Tagout according to local procedures.

2.Insert the setup fixture so it positions the head to the negative vertical
limit, and the head theta between its positive and negative limit.

3.Loosen the 4 motor mounting bolts and slide the motor up against the
tension spring. Hold it in position and retighten two of the bolts.

4.Slip the belt off the pulleys. Rotate the head theta motor shaft so that
the mark on the top of the shaft lines up with cables exiting the motor
housing, then rotate the shaft clockwise approximately 20 degrees
further.
5.Attach the belt to the pulleys while holding the motor shaft in
position.
6.Loosen the head theta motor mounting screws to allow the tension
spring to slide the motor into position. Retighten the motor mounting
screws.
7.Loosen the head vertical motor mounting screws and slide the motor up
against the tension spring using the jacking screw.

8.Rotate the head vertical motor shaft so the mark (or keyway, if no mark
exists) on top of the shaft lines up between case mounted connectors of
motor housing.
9.Attach the belt to the pulley while holding the motor shaft in position.
10.Loosen the head vertical motor mounting screws to allow tension
spring to slide the motor into position. Retighten the motor mounting
screws .
11.Remove the setup tool.

End of procedure

Use the following procedure to replace the vertical axis timing belt.
Procedure:

1.Power down the machine and perform Lockout/Tagout according to local procedures.

2.Loosen the four screws securing the vertical motor just enough to permit the motor to slide. Observe that the motor is spring loaded
against the timing belt.

3.Adjust the jacking screw in the jacking plate so that it applies enough pressure on the vertical motor so that the timing belt can be removed.
  Remove the timing belt.

4.Perform the Head Drive Home Pulse Setup Procedure. Refer to the
table of contents in this section for the location of this procedure.

End of procedure

Procedure:
1.Power down the machine and perform Lockout/Tagout according to local procedures.

2. Remove the bolt in the end of the arm link, allowing the link arm assembly to separate from the eccentric.

3.Loosen the 4 screws securing the theta motor just enough to allow the motor to slide toward the machine frame.

Observe that the motor is spring loaded against the theta timing belt.

4.Push the theta motor toward the machined (machining) frame.

Remove the theta timing belt from the motor theta pulley and slip it up and over the insert arm assembly and link arm assembly.

5.Perform the Head Drive Home Pulse Setup Procedure. Refer to the table of contents in this section for the location of this procedure.

6.After completing this adjustment, reset theta positions. Reference  Theta Axis Setup Procedure.

End of procedure

Removal Of The Insertion Head Assembly
To remove the Insertion Head Assembly, proceed as follows.
1.Power down the machine and perform Lockout/Tagout according to
                 local procedures.
The machine must be powered down and the local Lockout/Tagout
procedure performed to ensure personal safety during this procedure.

2.Open the inserter front cover for access to the insertion head drive
assembly.

3.Manually rotate the insertion head assembly 90 degrees clockwise.

4.Loosen the hex jam nut and set screw as shown below.

5.Loosen the socket set screw and remove the tooling pin.

6.While holding the insertion head assembly, open the shaft clamp.

7.Slide the insertion head assembly toward the back of the machine until the pusher is disengaged from the shaft.

8.Remove the insertion head assembly from the machine.

End of procedure

Prerequisites:
Drawing of the Radial Insertion Head Assembly
Electrical Wires Disconnected
Insertion Head Tooling has been removed
Comments:
This procedure assumes that the head drive assembly is being disassembled
to replace the drive mechanism.
To rebuild this assembly, reference the reassembly procedure found in this
module.
If possible, it is more efficient to remove the motors and bearings from the
assembly with the casting secured to the machine.
Procedure:

1.Power down the machine and perform Lockout/Tagout according to
local procedures.

2.Use a clamp to secure the head drive assembly, and remove the 4
mounting bolts. Lift the head drive assembly from the machine.

3.To replace the drive mechanism, first loosen the socket head cap screw
and remove the threaded locking collar clamp from the top of the drive
mechanism shaft. This allows the separation of the bearing assembly
from the top of the drive mechanism.

4.Loosen the screw in the push rod clamp and unscrew the push rod. This
allows the bearing assembly to completely separate from the drive
mechanism.

Purpose:
This procedure adjusts the BEC board settings so the positioning system
performs the correct adjustments to board error conditions encountered
during production runs.  If these settings are not correct, incorrect
adjustments would cause component misinsertions.
Prerequisites:
